Tell the Flaming Grille to Halt This Cruel Stunt
Flaming Grille Café on El Camino Avenue is at it again — serving lion meat as a way to attract patrons.
Although some people might find eating lion meat to be a thrill, what the restaurant owners won’t tell them is that lion meat is virtually unregulated. Lions raised for consumption in the United States are most assuredly not protected by the Animal Welfare Act and are completely omitted from the Humane Slaughter Act. Lion meat is largely ignored by federal authorities unless an illness-related complaint was to occur.
When complaints started coming in that lions should be preserved and not eaten, the owners of the Flaming Grille Café argued that lions are not on the endangered species list. Well, maybe not yet.
Due to the alarming decline in the population along with their habitat loss, Born Free USA and a coalition of wildlife conservation groups filed a petition with the Department of Interior today to list African lions as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA).
It should also be noted that lion meat that’s been showing up in the United States has been linked to a butcher shop in Chicago whose owner was convicted in 2003 for selling meat from federally protected tigers and leopards and selling it as “lion” meat.
**Please tell owners of the Flaming Grille — via an online form or by phone — to let them know that lions belong on the ESA list, not on the menu!

*Please stop selling lion meat burgers as a cruel promotional gimmick to attract customers! Although African lions are not yet on the endangered species list, they face a number of threats in the wild, including habitat loss and severe decline in population. Further, lions raised for consumption in the United States are most assuredly not protected by the Animal Welfare Act and are completely omitted from the Humane Slaughter Act. Lion meat is largely ignored by federal authorities unless an illness-related complaint was to occur. Please do the right thing and permanently take lion meat off your menu!

Evidence provided to the U.S. government this week overwhelmingly concludes that unless urgent action is taken now, a species that is symbolic with the heart of Africa will be lost from most of its current range. Numbers are in rapid decline across much of Africa — down from nearly 76,000 in 1980 to less than 40,000 today. In some countries, populations are so rare they may be counted on the fingers of two hands. Lions have become extinct in three of their former range states since 2008.
But does it matter? Why not let them go? Why not continue to persecute lions, convert their wilderness for agriculture, poison them with cheap insecticides or cut off their magnificent heads to hang above the door? Would we really miss them? Isn't the lion in the zoo a safe, secure, viable alternative? We are not going to lose lions as a species, they breed far too well in the miserable confines of captivity — but we may be about to lose wild lions and with them the wilderness areas of Africa.
Unlike the lion, which waits for our omnipotent will to be known, we have a choice. To destroy or to protect, to squander or to save. If we cannot conserve with compassion, make room for and appreciate the wild lion, then no other species stands a chance. If wild lions go, then, for the rest, it's only a matter of time.
